DATA: POPULATION DENSITY 2007 (ORNL)
[Status: Available at TerraViva! GeoServer.]
Knowing where people live is essential to understanding almost any phenomenon that has global scope and is geospatially heterogeneous (i.e., varies spatially). If you want to go beyond the cartoon-like level of national scale maps - each country coded to a single value so a megacity has the same value as a deserted wasteland - and really understand what is happening to people and places, you have to involve spatially explicit gridded data.
The Population Density 2007 map data depicts estimated human population per square kilometer across the entire globe, and is based on LandScan™ 2007 Global Population Database from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Join our Global Data Hound as he articulates objectives, methodologies, and assumptions used in the creation of this and other global population datasets.
