DATA: POLITICAL BOUNDARIES 2008 (ISciences)
[Status: See TerraViva! GeoServer.]
When war broke out between Russia and Georgia in August 2008 many of us hurried to our maps to learn exactly where the disputed area, South Ossetia, is. The war was a reminder that what geographers call “administrative boundaries” matter intensely.
Scientists, economists, and social scientists see administrative boundaries as “jars” of numbers to be analyzed - GDP per capita, freshwater withdrawal ratio, farmland acreage - so the size and shape of the "jar" matter. ISciences' National and Subnational Political Boundaries 2008 is now available featuring updated 1st level units and improved boundaries that incorporate a 1 arc second coastline mask derived from SRTM Water Body Data.
