DATA: POLITICAL BOUNDARIES 2008 (ISciences)
[Status: See TerraViva! GeoServer.]
When war broke out between Russia and Georgia in August many of us hurried to our maps to learn exactly where the disputed area, South Ossetia, is. The war was a reminder that what geographers call “administrative boundaries” matter intensely.
Scientists, economists, and social scientists see administrative boundaries as “jars” of numbers to be analyzed - GDP per capita, freshwater withdrawal ratio, farmland acreage - so the size and shape of the "jar" matter. ISciences' National and Subnational Political Boundaries 2008 is now available featuring updated 1st level units and improved boundaries that incorporate a 1 arc second coastline mask derived from SRTM Water Body Data.
