PACIFIC
DISASTER CENTER
The Pacific Disaster
Center's mission is to provide applied information
research and analysis support for the development of
more effective policies, institutions, programs, and
information products for the disaster management and
humanitarian assistance communities of the Asia Pacific
region and beyond.
TerraViva!, the global data-viewing engine
from ISciences, provided the power behind PDC's Indian
Ocean Tsunami Impact and Recovery Assessment,
a software product created to illlustrate the impacts
of the Great Sumatra Earthquake and Indian Ocean
Tsunami of December 26, 2004, and to support ongoing
recovery.
PRIVATE-BRANDED
DATA VIEWER
We customized the viewer to fit
the specific visualization needs of the
project. Maps, geostatistical data,
and shape files from open and proprietary
sources included:
census data, cities, ports,
airports,
roads, railroads,
tectonic
plates,
historic earthquakes, village
boundaries, estimated travel time from ports
and
airports, infrastructure damage, food balance,
freshwater withdrawals
and many others. Using time-series data we created
"map movies" of tsunami travel time, estimated
human travel time to high ground, pre-
and post-tsunami MODIS change
vector analysis for brightness and greenness, and others.
